There isn't really a need for it but it's like many other techie gadgets of today - a lot of extras that are handy but you wouldn't really miss them if they weren't there. And I fail to see how it clashes with the privacy issues Facebook alludes to as these are people who willingly give their details over to a third party (but I really wouldn't know FB's privacy laws).
